Is Fox Glacier Worth It?
Yes — if you are already on New Zealands West Coast.
Fox is smaller and less famous than Franz Josef, but it is also less crowded and the views of Mount Tasman from the terminal face are extraordinary. The helicopter option gives you the full alpine experience. If you are choosing between Fox and Franz Josef, the honest answer is: they are both worth it, and you should do both if you can.
Travellers on the West Coast who want to experience a glacier up close without the crowds.
You are only visiting New Zealand briefly and can only fit in one glacier — Franz Josef is slightly more established.
Fox Glacier New Zealand — Tours & Experiences
The longest glacier in the Southern Alps, 13km of ice descending through rainforest to near sea level. Slightly quieter than Franz Josef, closer to Mount Cook, and with its own distinct character.
Fox Glacier (Te Moaka o Tua) is 13km long — the longest glacier in New Zealand's Southern Alps. It sits 40 minutes south of Franz Josef, making the two glaciers easy to combine in a single trip. Where Franz Josef is known for the heli-hike, Fox has a slightly more laid-back character and is often considered the better option for scenic helicopter flights with Mount Cook views.
The glacier is named after Sir William Fox, who was New Zealand's Prime Minister in the 1860s. Unlike the busier Franz Josef, Fox has a smaller village feel — less commercial infrastructure, more low-key. If you're choosing between the two, consider what matters most: heli-hike = Franz Josef; Mount Cook views + quieter feel = Fox.
Fox vs Franz Josef — How to Choose
Choose Fox if...
You want to see Mount Cook from the air (Fox departures offer clearer views of Aoraki/Mount Cook), you prefer a quieter village atmosphere, you're combining with a Queenstown itinerary heading south, or you want slightly lower prices on comparable helicopter options.
Choose Franz Josef if...
The heli-hike is your priority (it's the iconic product), you want more tour operator options and availability, you're coming from Christchurch (more direct access), or you want the wider range of valley walk and nature tour options.

What to Expect on a Fox Glacier Experience
Whether you are doing a helicopter flight or a valley walk, Fox Glacier operates year-round — but conditions change daily. The glacier terminal face has retreated significantly over the past two decades, which means you no longer walk directly onto the ice from the valley floor. All glacier experiences require helicopter access or a guided walk to the viewing point.
The helicopter flights are the signature experience. A typical departure from Fox includes a safety briefing, helicopter walk around the aircraft, then a 20-30 minute flight depending on the option you choose. Landing on the glacier involves stepping out onto ice that is centuries old — blue-white, textured, and structurally different from anything you have seen at lower altitude. The snow is compact enough to walk on comfortably in guides boots.
For the valley walk, the track is well-maintained and follows the glacial river toward the terminal moraine. Guides explain the geology — how the Fox Glacier moves about a metre per day, carving the valley as it goes, and why the terminal face is now several kilometres from where it sat in the 1990s. Bring wet weather gear even in summer; the West Coast is one of New Zealand's wettest regions and conditions can change within hours.

Fox Glacier — Common Questions
Fox or Franz Josef — which is better?
It depends. If heli-hike is your priority, Franz Josef has the more famous product and more operators. If you want Mount Cook views from a helicopter, Fox has slightly better positioning for that. For valley walks, Fox is quieter and more low-key. You can visit both in one day — they're 40 minutes apart by road.
How do I get to Fox Glacier?
Fox Glacier village is on State Highway 6, roughly 3 hours south of Franz Josef, 2.5 hours from Wanaka, and 4.5 hours from Queenstown. The road through the West Coast is scenic but can be affected by weather — allow extra time in wet conditions. There are small-group transfers from Queenstown, Wanaka, and Christchurch.
What's the difference between the valley walk and the helicopter?
The valley walk takes you to the terminal moraine — the end of the glacier where it meets the valley floor. You'll see the glacier from a distance and through the forest. The helicopter gets you onto the ice, into the blue ice zone, and shows you the glacier's interior. They're completely different experiences at very different price points.
Can I see Mount Cook from Fox Glacier?
Yes — the Mount Cook + Fox combination helicopter flight (30 min) departs from Fox and lands on both the Fox Glacier and at Mount Cook (Aoraki). This is one of Fox's standout products — the view of New Zealand's highest peak from the helicopter is exceptional.
Is there a top time of day?
Morning is generally better for helicopter flights — clearer air and less chance of afternoon cloud building over the mountains. Valley walks can be done any time but are less interesting in poor visibility. If you're doing both in one day, do the helicopter in the morning, then the valley walk in the afternoon.
