Jokulsarlon vs Fjallsarlon, Two Lagoons, Two Different Trips

The Boat Trip Question
If you have time for one boat trip, do it on Jokulsarlon. The amphibian boats spend 30-40 minutes on the water moving through icebergs that are 5-15 metres tall. You see the colours properly. You hear the crack when a slab of ice flips. The zodiac tours are faster and rougher and get closer to the glacier face, which is the experience you actually remember if the weather is good. The Jokulsarlon zodiac sells out in summer a week out, so book ahead.
If you have time for two, Fjallsarlon's boat tour is the quieter, more intimate version. Smaller boat. Fewer passengers. The glacier face is right there, the channel is narrow, and the captain can get closer than the Jokulsarlon zodiac without pushing into unsafe water. It is also cheaper. Photography Comparison
Jokulsarlon gets the photos. The Diamond Beach across the road is the one with the clear ice chunks on the black sand, and the best light is in the two hours after sunrise and the two hours before sunset. The lagoon itself needs overcast or low-angle sun to show the blue. Bright midday sun flattens it. Most visitors see it at midday, which is why their photos look the same as everyone else's.
Fjallsarlon photographs better in midday. The glacier tongue casts a shadow on the lagoon in the morning, and the light bouncing off the ice face gives you texture on the water that Jokulsarlon does not. The walk to the glacier face from the Fjallsarlon car park is the best unguided photo opportunity in the area. 40 minutes round trip, no booking, optional crampon fitting at the trailhead if you want to step onto the ice.
Which One First?
First-time visitors should see both, in this order:
- Fjallsarlon first, in the morning. Smaller, calmer, walk to the glacier face. You will have it nearly to yourself at 8 At the even in July.
- Jokulsarlon second, late morning or late afternoon. Boat tour or Diamond Beach walk across the road. The crowds build between 10 At the and 3 PM, so plan around that.
If you only have time for one, choose Jokulsarlon. The Diamond Beach walk across the road is unique in the country, and the boat tour is more developed. If you have 90 minutes and want quiet, choose Fjallsarlon.
How It Pairs with the South Coast Day
Most guided south coast tours visit Jokulsarlon. Most rental car days stop at Jokulsarlon too, because the car park is large and the location is on Route 1. Fjallsarlon is 20 minutes west on a side road, easy to add if you are driving yourself and you have either an early or a late window. If you are on a guided bus, you are most likely seeing Jokulsarlon only.

Decision Rules
- Choose Jokulsarlon if you want the boat tour, the Diamond Beach walk, or you have limited time.
- Choose Fjallsarlon if you want quiet, a closer glacier view, a short walk rather than a boat, or you are returning in winter (boat tours pause, but Fjallsarlon's shore view is year-round and calmer in low season).
- Choose both if you have 5+ hours in the area and a car. They pair well as a morning-late-morning sequence, with the boat tour in between.
