Common Questions about Glacier Tours

What is the best time to visit in Iceland?

Jökulsárlón is the most spectacular — the lagoon with floating icebergs leading to the ocean is genuinely unlike anything else in Europe, and it's accessible as a day trip from Reykjavík. Sólheimajökull is the most practical for a shorter day and gives you right onto the glacier with crampons. Katla ice cave tours are the most dramatic if you're comfortable combining the cave with a South Coast itinerary.

Can I visit Jökulsárlón without a tour?

Partially — the lagoon and beach are accessible without a tour (it's along the Ring Road). The glacial lagoon itself is free to view from the shore. However, the boat tour (amphibious or zodiac) is what makes the experience — gliding between the icebergs is extraordinary. The blue ice cave inside the glacier can only be entered with a certified guide; attempting it independently is dangerous and prohibited.

Is Iceland or New Zealand better for glacier experiences?

Iceland is more accessible and offers better variety — you can do glacier hikes, ice caves, and boat tours in a single day. The South Coast combines waterfalls and black sand beaches with the glacier experience. New Zealand (Fox and Franz Josef glaciers) offers helicopter-accessed ice features but the glaciers are retreating rapidly — what you see today may look very different in 5 years. Iceland's infrastructure for glacier tourism is more mature.

Do I need hiking boots for glacier tours in Iceland?

Yes — waterproof hiking boots with ankle support are required for glacier hikes. Many tour operators provide crampons and ice axes but expect you to have your own boots. If you're booking through Viator, check the kit list carefully — some operators specify a minimum boot sole (Vibram-type). For ice caves, the boots requirement is the same but you're not walking on the glacier itself.

What is the weather like on glacier tours?

Unpredictable. Iceland's weather can change from sunshine to hail in 30 minutes on the South Coast. For glacier hikes and ice caves, tours operate in all weather except the most severe — and cold rain is common even in summer (July–August). Wear layers: base layer, fleece, waterproof shell. Gloves and a warm hat are essential. The tour companies provide all technical equipment; you just need outdoor clothing.

How dangerous are glacier tours?

Glacier hiking is categorised as a non-technical walk with crampons — suitable for most fitness levels. Accidents are rare because all reputable operators use certified guides, fixed ropes, and check conditions daily. Ice caves are riskier because they're natural formations that change with each season — never enter a glacier cave without a certified guide, even if the entrance looks inviting. The biggest real risk is weather-related: cold, wet, and wind are the main dangers, not the glacier itself.

What should I wear for an ice cave tour in Iceland?

The same as a glacier hike: warm layers, waterproof jacket and trousers, hiking boots. The temperature inside an ice cave is around 0°C even in summer. Tour operators provide crampons and helmets. You don't need specialist ice climbing gear. Bring gloves and a headlamp if you have one — some operators provide them, check the tour details.

How far in advance should I book glacier tours in Iceland?

For Jökulsárlón boat tours and Katla ice caves, book 2–3 weeks ahead in summer (June–August) — these sell out. For Sólheimajökull glacier hikes, 3–5 days is usually sufficient. Small-group tours (under 12 people) book up faster. If you're visiting in May or September, the same lead times apply but crowds are lighter. Winter (November–March) has better availability but fewer operators running ice cave tours.
