What Surprised Me About South Iceland

The glacier and its caves run on different calendars. According to the seasonal picture, winter (November to March) is ice cave season, while glacier hikes and Jökulsárlón boat tours carry on through summer.

That difference matters when you plan. Katla is rougher, darker and more exposed to the weather, and it runs for more of the year. The crystal-type caves under Vatnajökull are winter-only and far more photogenic, but they lie further east, so the drive becomes part of the booking. In February I have stood inside a cave with my breath freezing onto the lens hood and my shutter finger going numb. In July I walked the same tongue in shirtsleeves, crampons biting wet blue ice while meltwater ran in bright channels around my boots. The glacier never closes: only the caves do. Skip the natural ice cave plan if your dates fall outside winter, and book a glacier hike or a lagoon boat.

Planning the visit well

Layer with wool, not cotton, because cotton becomes dangerous once it gets wet on the ice.

Crampons need boots with solid ankle support and a stiff sole, so brand-new boots are a poor choice. If you rent, go a half-size larger than normal, because crampons tighten the fit. Bring two pairs of gloves, since one pair will get wet from handling ice. Wear sunglasses even under cloud, because glacier glare works faster than you expect.

At Jökulsárlón, a polarising filter cuts the glare off the lagoon. For zodiac trips I would book the early or late slots, which have fewer people and better light, and a mid-morning boat gives the clearest light for iceberg photos.
